11/6 to 18/6/2021 Portreath to Penzance (6days - 59.6mls)

Updated: Jun 21, 2021

TeamSWCP chose an excellent week of weather to get back on the SWCP based in a beautiful 3-bedroomed house called Lyndale between Penzance and Newlyn.

What we didn't get right was that, when we booked the property back in February, we were unaware that the G7 world leaders had booked the Carbis Bay Hotel to welcome us and then to have a chat for three days from the 11/6 to 13/6! This meant that there were road closures and path diversions but we were able to organise the timings of our walks to avoid any major problems and apart from a slight issue near St Ives we completed the planned 60miles.

Although the house itself was perfect for our needs with excellent, seemingly brand new fixtures and fittings and furnishings, on the roof of a nearby house seagulls had built a huge nest in the shelter of the chimney stack and spent the week feeding and encouraging 3 babies to fledge. Consequently we had to check our cars each morning particularly as on the first morning Justine's car had taken a huge direct hit on the windscreen!

As with our 2 weeks of walking last autumn, this method of walking the path is proving a success in that David, Justine and David A walk, whilst Fiona as "Logistics Manager" drives us to the start and from the finish each day, before visiting places of interest in the area. In this way we were able to swim in the wonderful art deco Jubilee Pool on the sea front in Penzance, visit the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno both for rehearsals at the end of one days walking, whilst Fiona also attended a performance at the theatre the following morning. Fiona was also able to visit old friends in the area on a couple of the days and visit local gardens and coffee. We couldn't do any of this though without a FIONA!

Additionally, as Justine was training for the Serpentine 2 mile swim in September which would enable her to complete the London Classics, as she has already done the London Marathon and the 100mile RideLondon, the property was well placed for her to do a daily swim in the sea as well as a circular run around Penzance before we set off for our SWCP walk each day - impressive energy and stamina or what!

When we left on the Friday morning we all went for morning coffee to the Godolphin Hotel which overlooks St Michaels Mount at Marazion before driving back to Bristol.

Each of the above walks are described in individual blog pages.

NOTE - The SWCP Association Walking Guides for each leg of the path are available from the SWCP Association Shop and are packed with detail not only about the route but also interesting facts about what to see on the way.
